ROAD CLOSURE TO VRATA
We would like to inform you that as of today (13.11.2025) from 8:00 p.m. onward, the operator (Gorenjska gradbena družba d.d.) will close the state road RT 908, section 1383 Mojstrana – Vrata, from km 3.720 to km 11.600, due to winter conditions.
Access through the barrier up to the road closure (up to Rosa) is permitted for residents, property owners, managers or tenants of buildings and land, service providers, and deliveries for residents.
Access will also be granted to public service providers on duty (police, firefighters, and other protection and rescue units, etc.).
Passage through the barrier with parking tickets will be disabled from today at 8:00 p.m.
Thank you for your understanding.
TEST PERIOD – OPERATION OF BARRIERS ON THE VRŠIČ ROAD
The Municipality of Kranjska Gora is preparing to test a barrier system for entering the Vršič Pass area. The test will be conducted by the Slovenian Infrastructure Agency between 13 and 27 October 2025.
The purpose of introducing the system is to improve traffic and parking management in this heavily trafficked and touristic area, where the number of visitors has significantly increased in recent years, leading to greater environmental pressures at the starting points for the most popular mountain destinations. The Vršič Pass is considered one of the most congested access points, so the introduction of this system is an important step toward sustainable traffic management in this part of the Julian Alps.
On behalf of the Municipality of Kranjska Gora, Komunala Kranjska Gora d.o.o. will manage both the public parking areas and the barrier system on the Vršič Pass.
Access to the Vršič Pass area will be regulated by entry barriers installed at both access points of the Vršič Road — on the Kranjska Gora side, the barriers are located beyond Lake Jasna, and on the Trenta side, before the turnoff for the Soča River source. At these points, the road widens into two lanes. The left lane is designated for through traffic (transit across the pass), while the right lane is reserved for vehicles parking at the top of the pass, along an approximately 700-meter section of the road where parking spaces will be arranged.
RIGHT LANE – VEHICLES PARKING AT THE TOP OF THE VRŠIČ PASS
Drivers entering the right lane to park at the top of the pass will need to take a parking ticket at the barrier. Upon arrival at the top, they must place the ticket visibly inside the vehicle. When exiting the area, the barrier will open automatically based on license plate recognition. If the system fails to recognize the plate, the driver can still exit by inserting the parking ticket into the exit terminal.
Since parking will be free during the test period, parking meters will not be in use.
LEFT LANE – THROUGH TRAFFIC
The left lane is intended for all other users who do not plan to park at the top of the pass. This includes transit travelers, motorcyclists, cyclists, and visitors wishing to park elsewhere along the Vršič Road — for example, near mountain huts, the Russian Chapel, or on private property.
At the left-lane barrier, the system will also recognize the vehicle’s license plate and open automatically. Vehicles whose license plates cannot be read (e.g., motorcycles, tractors, sports cars) will receive a ticket indicating transit passage. Upon exiting the area, vehicles entering via license plate recognition will have the barrier open automatically if the plate is correctly identified. If a ticket was taken upon entry, the driver must insert it into the exit terminal to leave the area.
TURNING AREA
Where the road widens into two lanes, a turning area will be arranged in the left lane. This allows drivers who wish to park at the top to turn around safely if they discover that all parking spaces are already occupied or that a queue has formed in the right lane. The turning area enables drivers to avoid entering the barrier zone and return safely.
It is important to emphasize that if the right lane is occupied up to the point of road widening, vehicles must not stop in the left (transit) lane, as this would obstruct traffic flow. In such cases, the driver must use the turning area or continue driving in the left lane — parking at the top of the pass will then no longer be possible.
ASSISTANCE AND MONITORING DURING THE TEST PERIOD
During the test period, traffic marshals will be present both at the barrier sites and at the top of the pass to provide assistance and oversee the testing process. In October 2025, during the test phase, only 39 of the planned 92 parking spaces will be temporarily available, as construction in the area has not yet been completed. Parking will remain free of charge until the end of the testing period. In case of problems, a dedicated helpline will be available: +386 30 995 799.
All road users are urged to exercise patience, strictly observe traffic signs, and follow the instructions of the marshals, as this will be essential for the successful testing of a system that will, in the long term, improve traffic safety and spatial management in the Vršič Pass area.
Thank you for your understanding.
